MESSAGE-MATCH WORKSHEET

Guide

Keep the promise from the first click.

Message match means the page continues the conversation the campaign started. The same audience should recognise the same problem, offer and next step. Use this worksheet before launch and whenever a campaign brings visitors who are interested but poorly matched to the business.

Editorial responsibility: Nico JaroszewskiUpdated:

Write the promise in one plain sentence.

State what the campaign offers, who it is for and what happens next. Avoid combining several offers into an ambiguous promise. Then compare that sentence with the page headline and introduction. A reader should not need industry knowledge to connect them.

Check the source context too: search terms, ad copy and creative can create different expectations. If several campaign themes imply materially different outcomes, agree which ones the page can honestly support.

Put useful evidence beside the relevant claim.

A business buyer needs more than a repeated slogan. Explain the scope, the way work is delivered and what the customer must provide. Use real work, approved testimonials or demonstrable methods where available. If there is no relevant case study, an honest process explanation is preferable to invented proof.

  • Claim: what does the page ask the buyer to believe?
  • Evidence: what can the business substantiate?
  • Boundary: what is excluded or depends on discovery?
  • Objection: what would prevent a sensible buyer from enquiring?

Match the button to the actual next step.

“See a concept”, “request a quote” and “book an assessment” create different expectations. The page, form and follow-up should describe the same action. If a free concept begins with a qualification conversation, say so before the visitor submits.

Check every conversion CTA, including the header and mobile layout. Supporting navigation may lead to evidence or explanation, but it should not make the main action ambiguous. The form should ask only for information required to assess or progress the enquiry.

Review the journey beyond the page.

Submit a controlled test and inspect what the business receives. Does the person following up know which offer attracted the enquiry? Can they explain the next step without asking the customer to repeat everything? Preserve relevant campaign context without treating it as proof of purchase intent.

Keep a simple review sheet with the promise, headline, evidence, form ask and first response. Ask someone outside the project to identify mismatches. Resolve the most consequential gap before making cosmetic changes or launching a new variant.

Questions before you start

Questions before you start

Does the headline have to repeat the advertisement word for word?

No. It should clearly continue the same promise. Natural, useful language matters more than mechanical repetition.

Should we put every objection above the fold?

No. Prioritise the core offer and next step, then provide evidence and answers in a readable sequence. The whole page should support the decision.

Can strong design compensate for an unclear offer?

Design can help explain a clear offer, but it cannot decide the scope or buyer fit for you. Resolve those questions in the brief.
